Fluffy pyrenomycete: Cryptonectriella biparasitica?
Eduard Osieck, 16-12-2015 20:47
This striking fluffy pyrenomycete grew from old stromata of an unidentified species (Eutypa or Diatrypella?). Spores hyaline, 1-septate, not constricted, smooth, broadly ellipsoid, 11-14.5 x 5.5-9.0 um. Asci cylindrical, with apical ring and thin stipe: pars sporifera 90-110 + stipe 25-45 um. Paraphyses thread-like and free floating. These microscopical characters fit Cryptonectriella biparasitica (= Charonectria biparasitica Von Höhnel 1903) quite well. The type was found on/ in Valsa (= Eutypa) flavovirens (see Genera of Bionectriaceae, Hypocreaceae and Nectriaceae (Hypocreales, Ascomycetes), Rossman et al. 1999: 186).

Perithecia (diameter 0,35 mm) whitish with a long reddish papilla 0,4-1.0 mm and longer. Perithecia surrounded by an hyaline hyphal structure which is most abundant ("fluffy") around the papilla. Rossman et al. only describe ascomata with a short conical papilla (50-150 um) and do not mention any loose hyphal structure, in particular surrounding the papilla.

Interestingly Von Höhnel (1906) describes Debaryella vexans (considered to be conspecific with Cryptonectriella biparasitica by Rossman et al.) with a rather long papilla: "Perithecien weichhäutig, blaßgelblich, kugelig, etwa 1/2 mm breit, mit einem dünnen, etwa 1/2 mm langen oder etwas längeren Hals."

Does anybody has an idea what this could be?

Any help appreciated, Eduard

Re : Fluffy pyrenomycete: Cryptonectriella biparasitica?
I have just examined the material which is now much deteriorated. Two photos of older ascomata show that the hairs on the papilla are much reduced. Quite a different view!
