Neonectria sur Fagus (SE Europe)
Stoykov Dimitar, 26-11-2015 16:22
Stoykov DimitarHallo, Dear Friends,

This autumn I came up with an interesting find on bark of beec, which is qutie similar morpholocically to the data about North American - Neonectria faginata in the sence of Rossman et al. (2006) , but has differences on the basis of other than North American distribution and Fagus  grandifoilia.
Ascomata wall KOH (+). Asci about 71-76 x 11-12 micrometers. Spores 10.5-13.6 x 4.5-6.5 micrometers, slightly constricted at the septa.

Kind regards, Dimitar

Re : Neonectria sur Fagus (SE Europe)
Hi Dimitar,
Neonectria faginata is known only from USA.
All characteristics that you provide fit well with N. coccinea.

Neo. faginata is easily identified because it is known only on species of Fagus in
North America and produces macroconidia morethan 80µm long when 5-septate.
N. faginata
: Ascospores ellipsoidal to fusiform with narrowly rounded ends,
straight or slightly curved, hyaline, finely spinulose,
1-septate, (8.5–)10.3–12.3(–14.3)×(4.1–)4.4–6.2
(–8.0)µm.
N. coccinea
is distinguishable based on host specificity occurring only on Fagus in Europe. Ascospores ellipsoidal to fusiform with narrowly rounded ends, straight or slightly curved, hyaline, finely spinulose, 1 septate, (9.1–)11.8–14.6(–19.3)×(3.7–)4.9–6.3(–7.6)µm

Regards,
Christian

Hi Christian,

Thank you so much for the comments on morphology of both species and detailed descriptions!

Best wishes,
