Strange Scutellinia
Malcolm Greaves, 23-09-2015 01:05
Malcolm GreavesThis Scutellinia was found on mud in a damp rut made by felling machinery. A first look at the round spores, with low warts some slightly pointed and others rounded or with flat tops looked a good fit for S heterosphaera. Looking at the spores in the ascus made me doubt this though. There were some with what looked much more like the "sharks fin" spines of S legalae. A spore drop confirmed this mixture of spore ornamentation.
Has anyone else come across this phenomenon?

Re : Strange Scutellinia
A second spore drop produced the same two very distinctive types of spore.

Good evening Malcolm.

I do not think I met these differences so as marked. Perhaps the spores are they not all mature enough?

No, I'm not new to Beñat.

Michel.

Re : Strange Scutellinia
Michel,
When I saw the spores I thought exactly the same, that they had been expelled from the ascus prematurely but having now seen two spore drops ( and they were on to a cover slip placed over the apothecia) with exactly the same result I am sure they must be mature. Many but not all the groups ejected show the same totally different mixed spore grouping.
I am not sure it will help at all but I will post some photos of the multi-septate sometimes swollen hairs up to 800 long.

Re : Strange Scutellinia
As it looked as though this was going to go in the unknown bin until someone can solve the puzzle I thought I would take a few more photos and as the two smaller apothecia were in better condition I used them. My first mistake was to assum that just because they were only centemeters away they were the same species. They were where I got the maximum length of the hairs from at 800µ but a photo of the spores shows instantly that they are from a Scutellina heterosphaera nom prov. Globose but with low small warts some rounded some pointed and signs of a network.
The hairs on the original specimen are no more than a maximum of 320µ with either no roots or a simple bifurcate root.
Thanks
