Pyreno on Fagus leaves
Enrique Rubio, 21-04-2015 18:18
Enrique Rubio

Hi to everybody

This enigmatic pyreno on Fagus sylvatica old leaves at the sea level (I never seen it at the montaneous level where Fagus is very common in my country) forms blackish, scattered conical, ostiolate perithecia 0.3-0.5 mm in diam. on bleached patches with irregular margins at both sides of the leaf.

The globose to pyriform perithecium is covered by a clypeate structure with an epidermoid texture. Asci narrowly fusiform up to 175 x 4 with a n small refringent apical apparatus only well visible in IKI (IKI negative) or cotton blue. Scolescospores filiform, hyaline, spirally disposed inside the asci, for exemple 150 x 1.

I don't know a good genus for my fungus. Can you help me?

Thanks in advance

Re : Pyreno on Fagus leaves

Hi Enrique,

Somewhere in Diaporthales... Perhaps around Linospora ?

Good luck !

Re : Pyreno on Fagus leaves

Hi Alain

I have considered Linospora but in this genus  the ostiole is lateral and no central (as mine) and the peridium is said to be built by a textura prismatica not epidermoidea.

Do you think theses asci are typical for Diaporthales?

Thanks a lot, Alain

A species from Diaporthales ? I don't know.  even if textura epidermoidea, apical apparatus, habit are ok, It was just an idea to open a talk.

It's unknwon for me.

Alain

Re : Pyreno on Fagus leaves

Thanks Alain

It is curious all the leaves of these Fagus in a Botanical Garden are 'infected' by this enigmatic fungus that I never seen at the montaneous Fagus forest...
