Discomycete on resin

Hi,

here I have a small, greyish discomycete that grows on resin on a living trunk of Larix decidua (soc. anamorph of Bisporella resinicola). No real idea where to place it... Ascospores have up to 9 septa and measure up to 41 x 2 µm. Asci are IKI bb and up to 65 µm long. Paraphyses are hyaline, without content, sometimes irregularly branched and/or conspicuously inflated. Excipulum consists of roundish, hyaline, slightly thick-walled cells. The description is based on rehydrated material, photos are not mine.

Difficult to say something to this fungus. To see the excipulum would perhaps help, a median section that also hits base and margin.

It would be easier to have the living features, for instance, did the paraphyses contain VBs, especially in their inflated part?

The only idea I have is Pseudohelotium, but that is only a guess.

Thanks, Zotto. Yes, unfortunately I don't have any information on the characters of this species in living state. I was hoping that someone might recognize this fungus due to its special substrate and somewhat unusual microscopical features; usually I don't spend too much time with trying to identify discomycetes in dead state. But I will try to make a section and take photos of the excipulum.

Just wanted to let you know that I tried a couple of sections but the material is in pretty bad state because the cells of the excipulum are mostly collapsed and thus impossible to study. I guess we'll have to try to find this fungus again in living state to examine it properly.

Hi Gernot

 collapsing is usually not a problem, in KOH the cells generally swell and look nice, especially in CR when hyaline. But I sections are not easy with dead material, especially when the apothecia sit on such crumbled substrate like old resin.
