asco bleu à grande spore (mais immature)
M Jonathan, 23-11-2014 21:09

Hi Jonathan

this looks to me to be a Patellaria close to P. atrata. I distinguish a P. crassispora nom. prov. which has a blue pigment and in which the slightly wider spores are much less tapered towards base and tend to be multiguttulate.

thank you, P atrata was one of my suspected specie, but i though it was supposed to be almost pure black, but time will tell, they might get mature in the damp chamber, so i will be able to confirm if this is indeed P crassipes.

Yes, try maturation! P. atrata has an olivaceous pigment around the tips of paraphyses whereas P. crassispora a bluish.

Re : asco bleu à grande spore (mais immature)
from this point, how long do you think it should take for it to be fully mature?

This is difficult. usually these fungi are most of their time dry. When you keep them prmanently moist it can be that they get overgwon by faster-growing fungi. Patellaria withstands many weeks of compete dryness. How fast they mature I do not know, but max. 1 week should be enough to get an immature ascus mature I think.

Re : asco bleu à grande spore (mais immature)
i found some mature one on the same piece of wood, it a shame that those picture do not show how much blue the paraphyse tip actually are, if you want i dry it and ask someone to make culture of them and then sequence it.

in situ, the blueish tint is faint but clear

Yes, I know this photography problem with colours....

If you have the possibility for a culture and sequence this would be fine . Long ago we cultured P. atrata and P. andina, and they both formed a coelomycetous anamorph (unreported in the literature to our knowledge).

Sequences are only a few in GenBank about Patellaria, so this would be valuable in any case!

Re : asco bleu à grande spore (mais immature)
thank you! i try my best with a quite cheap microscope!

do you know what media was used for the cultures? i will start to dry them today, but it will probably take a few week before i can go to the laboratory again

regards.

The species will easily survive some weeks. The menia we used were usually CMA or MEA, often only half of the normal concentration. I think this species is rather easily to culture.
