Fossil spores of ascomycetes
Randi Danielsen, 11-11-2014 12:01
Does anyone recognize these spores? I am a palaeobotanist and at the moment we are working on an archaeological site in Portugal (bronze age to present). These spores appear in the sediment in large quantities at various levels and may be significant to understand the origin of the layers.

Thank you for the attention

Re : Fossil spores of ascomycetes
Have you consulted Jansonius and Elsik?

Re : Fossil spores of ascomycetes
No defenitive answer, only some ideas:
1st spore: remind me that of Sphinctrina, not S. turbinata that I'm used to observe, but I think ti be similar to that of S. leucopoda, images of which you can see here at AscoFrance;
2nd spore: seems similar to that of Calicium or Cyphelium spp.
Hope this helps,
zaca

Re : Fossil spores of ascomycetes
Thank you. Do you know if these lichen ascomycetes indicate special conditions, like for instance dung, litter, cereals?

Sorry, but that I don't know.
