Unidentified specie in Brazil
Francisco Calaça, 18-06-2013 17:43
Francisco CalaçaHi all!
I have been found this specie in cow dung in Brazil, are small red fruitbodies with the hyaline spores??... In this pic, these images are stained with Congo Red?. The measures of spore are: (22) 25.7 - 29.5 (29.8) x (13.1) 14.8 - 17.7 (17.9) µm [Q = (1.4) 1.6 - 1.8 (2)] with Me = 27.8 x 16.3 µm ; Qe = 1.7. The ascus are clavate, unitunicate, sltaked measure are: 68-70 x (25) 26,2 µm?. Someone have a idea of genus (and possible sp)??
Many Thanks,
Calaça.

Re : Unidentified specie in Brazil
Is it possible to have a bigger image of ascospores? Are they smooth or not?

Hi Francisco,
very nice specimen!
Amy Rossman thinks this fungus looks a bit like Selinia pulchra, a very rare hypocrealean that we have no idea where it belongs!
So, I would like cultuvate it, could you please send me a part of your dried collection?
Thanks in advance

Christian

Re : Unidentified specie in Brazil
Hi Calac,

If this is a species of the genus Selinia, then it is not Selinia pulchra (spores are much larger), but Selinia africana RS Khan & J.C. Krug, Mycologia 81 (4) 653.  Although the spores are slightly too short, but the spores of Selinia antarctica Speg., Boln Acad. nac. Cienc. Cordoba 11 (1): 55 are narrower.

Hi Peter,
I agree with you , it is not S. pulcra but it could be the genus Selinia, which we don't know where it belongs, it is why I would like to cultivate it.

Christian

Hi,

happy to see that we all have the same opinion. Francisco had sent me photos of this one before posting here and I promised him Selinia, but I am not very good at outer european Selinias.

@Christian: S. pulchra isn't that rare, We had it twice in Germany in 2012. If we find it again, do you wish to have a collection of it?

All the best
björn
