Lydia KoelmansPlease can anyone tell me the species name of the
Hartmut Schubert found this Scutellinia with globose ascospores on a forest road and we are not sure about how to name this species. The ascospores resemble to S. barlae but the hairs are too long and have a multifurcate base. The Scutellinias with globose spores are sometimes really difficult so we hope you can help us. :)
Best wishes,
Gernot

This is probably Scutellinia heterosphaera Jeannerot & Matocec, a new species of sphaeosporic Scutellinia, described by my "hrvati" friend Neven Matocec (croatian collections) and me (French (mine + leg. Thierry Duchemin and Gilbert Moyne) and spanish (leg. Placido Iglesias) collections). Publication is on course. I would finish the studies by SEM photographs with an institute near my house before...
This new species is confirmed by phylogenic studies and takes place in the section Legaliae near S. legaliae.
I attach drawings of spores pending publication.
If possible, I'll be very glad if you can send me one apothecia to confirm my idea and eventually to integrate this collection in our study and article (for repartition, ecology...etc.).
Many thanks Gernot,
Sincerely,
Beñat Jeannerot
thank you very much for responding! So it might even by a species not yet described, this is very interesting. The difficulties with the identification of this collection are not a wonder then. :)
Does the length and the multifurcate base of the hairs fit your Scutellinia heterosphaera? I am really looking forward to the publication.
I'll ask Hartmut, who found this Scutellinia, if he can send you some apothecia but I'm sure he will.
Best wishes,
Gernot

Thanks for your note.
Effectively, this species has long hairs, sometimes exceeding 1000 µm, with bases 1-2-3-multifurcate and grows along the forest roads in the initial station (behind my house).
Even the macro picture is resembling.
Thank you of preventing Hertmut.
Beñat
I have made a gathering 2 weeks ago of a Scutellinia which I also called S. barlae but with hairs up to 600 µm and with simple or multi-furcate base. I wonder if this collection - made in Belgium, province of Brabant Wallon along a path in a rather humid habitat - is not also S. heterosphaera ?
The spores are 16 - 19 µm in diameter with warts of 1 - 1,5 µm high. They are irregular in size, even on the same spore. I join some pictures of the microscopy.
Best regards,
Daniel

Thanks for your note.
It's very interesting. It's probably around S. heterosphaera. The name is given (choose by Neven) for the reason you have explained : heterogeneous form and size of warts around a sphere !
And hairs are corresponding too.
Could you send me a sample too ? I'll be very glad if we can precise the repartition of this species.
I think we (Neven and me) can wait those specimens (Hartmut and you) to complete article. We can wait because it's long to obtain some SEM images.
S. barlae is very different in the size and form of hairs. Unpretentious and if you want, I can send you my article on this species in OZP.
Very amically,
Beñat
the heterogeneous ornamentation is impressive, thanks for showing.
Beñat, Hartmut will send me his collection and after I made some photos I am going to send it to you. Could you please give me your address?
I'd be very interested in your article on S. barlae.
Best wishes,
Gernot

I have sent you my postal address and my article in OZP by mail.
Regards,
Beñat
Thanks for your answer.
Yes, of course, I can send the apothecia (there was only one). Please, give me your postal address.
I am also interrested in your article on S. barlae.
Best regards,
Daniel

I have sent you my postal address too by mail.
Regards,
Beñat
Hartmut sent me a part of his collection of S. heterosphaera and I made some more photos of the hairs and the spores. The ornamentation is very similar to the drawing you attached.
Could you please send me your address by mail and if possible also the article on S. barlae? Thank you!
Best wishes,
Gernot

Effectively, spores are very closed.
Thanks to send me this specimen and please thanks Hartmut for me.
I have sent address and article at 19 june but, apparently, you haven't received..
So, I write you again by mail.
