Need fresh specimens of Ophiognomonia melanostyla
Amy Rossman, 16-03-2011 14:52
Dear avid microfungus collectors,

We are working on the phylogeny of the Diaporthales especially the Gnomoniaceae. We have two isolates of the type species of Ophiognomonia, namely O. melanostyla, but they are slightly different. Thus we would like additional fresh collections of this species so that we can make isolations and sequence it. It occurs in spring on the undersurface of overwintered leaves of Tilia. The black perithecia are partially immersed and it has a very long beak. The ascospores are long, thin, 37-43 x 1.5 2 um. If you find this species and are willing to send it to us, please make an air-dried specimen wrapped in paper and send it to me as an herbarium specimen.

Thank you!

Hi Amy,
I saw "melanostyla" yesterday, many thousands ! I will look at them and I'll give you news.
I will look for french Apioporthe vespris too. I already one recolt in my herbarium, but recolted in 2009. I suppose it's too old, isn't it ?

Alain,

Wonderful! I know it's the season for these fungi. I'm afraid that 2009 is too old. A. vepris would be useful as well.

Re:Need fresh specimens of Ophiognomonia melanostyla
I have several places where I usually gather it. As soon as the weather is a bit better, I can check to see if the perithecia's are mature enough and send you some samples.

Cheers - Luc BAILLY.

I check it this morning, it's OK, ascospores around 40 x 1.5 µm. I will post it in one hour.
