Black on Andromeda polifolia leaves
Marja Pennanen, 01-03-2012 21:56
Hello,

while studying white hairy Lachnums on Andromeda and I noticed these black ones.
They are about 0,1 mm wide.
Spores are septate, brownish,18-20x4-5,
Asci about 70x10, hairs about 50x5.

With Danish pyrenomycetes I ended to Coleroa genus, but no species there had this big spores.
I'm naturally not sure weather this is Coleroa or something else...
Good ideas are needed.

hello Marja

could it not be Gibbera andromedae? - see: http://www.librifungorum.org/Image.asp?ItemID=7&ImageFileName=SyllogeFungorum1-598.jpg
(where it is listed as Eriosphaeria)

best wishes

Chris

Hi Chris,

that seems to fit.
Thank you very, very much for introducing this species.
The whole genus is new for me :D

Re : Black on Andromeda polifolia leaves
Hi Rene,

the specimen was from last July and only few leaves with some fruitbodies, which I hadn't noticed before putting one leaf under my poor stereomicroscope.
I picked them because of this white Lachnum (virgineum) growing on them.
I naturally keep the specimen and try also to keep on eye some other plants, where Gibbera can be found.
It's nice to find new species.

Next summer is approaching and I know many places, where to search for Andromeda leaves...
