Lecanidion atratum on Lavatera?
Jenny Seawright,

Hello all, Black disco found on thin dead twigs of Lavatera arborea - spores hyaline 8(9) septate, 37-49 x 8µm. The ascus in the photograph below 140 x 15 µm.
The pluvivorous key in Ellis takes me to Lecanidion atratum / Patellaria atrata but I wondered if anyone could confirm or correct this?
With regards
Jenny

Re : Lecanidion atratum on Lavatera?
Hello Jenny
looks fine to me unless there is something else very similar. Were you able to see bitunicate asci? Zotto has a good series of images, see under:
Ascomycota\Dothideomycetes\Patellariales\Patellaria
best wishes

Looks like Patellaria atrata (formerly Lecanidion) but you coud measure more spores because there is a species that goes up to 10 µm spore width, which has a blusih instead of olivaceous exudate in the hymenium (in transmitted light around tips of paraphyses).

Re : Lecanidion atratum on Lavatera?
Thanks Chris,
Yes, the asci appeared bitunicate (sorry for poor image) and the young apothecia were slit-shaped as shown in Zotto's images.
I reckoned I was close, just not sure if there might have been a more host-specific species not mentioned in Ellis?
With regards,
Jenny

Re : Lecanidion atratum on Lavatera?
Thank you Zotto - I'll slice a few more spores but I did notice a greenish colour under the dissecting microscope before squashing the sections.

Jenny

Re : Lecanidion atratum on Lavatera?
macroscopically both species look black, but when you make a squash mount or better a section then you see in transmitted light very well this colour.

Re : Lecanidion atratum on Lavatera?
Sorry, that was a typo - it should have read " after squashing the sections" ....!
