octospora coccinea ?
carl van den broeck, 21-01-2024 21:37
carl van den broeckDear guests
On a wall in Veurne (B) we find a lot of Octospora on Bryum capilara. With multiple keys the result is O coccinea, but I am not satisfied because the spores I find are wider than in the description on octospora.de and FMBDS (Van Vooren).  Where is my mistake?

28.4 [29.6 ; 30.3] 31.5 × 10.7 [11.1 ; 11.4] 11.8 µm
Q = 2.5 [2.6 ; 2.7] 2.8 ; N = 17 ; C = 68%
Me = 29.9 × 11.3 µm ; Qe = 2.7

Re : octospora coccinea ?
Dear Carl,
your collection represents an undescribed species that is relatively frequently recorded on Bryum capillare across Europe, see e.g. here https://bryophilous.co.uk/octospora-sp-bryum-capillare/, based on DNA it falls in the Octospora coccinea agg. but the spores are indeed different.
