Ciboria-like apothecium on deciduous stick
Stefan Jakobsson, 11-08-2022 00:45
On a thin deciduous stick (Salix/Alnus/Betula) on moist sand I found a light brownish grey apothecium 4 mm diam. The excipulum is t. globulosa and the medulla t. intricata. The spores are (15.2)15.7-18.0(19.6) × (4.5)4.7-5.4(5.7) µm with many medium sized guttules. The asci are 128-152 × 7.1-11.9 µm and the praphyses are filled with low refractive guttules.

I have difficulties finding even a genus; it has much in common with Ciboria but I don't think the spores fit in.

I would appreciate opinions on this one.

Stefan

Yes, clearly sclerotiniaceous. Although very well documented, I have no clear idea. Spore guttulation together with globulosa could point to Rutstroemia bolaris, but that is only known from Carpinus and its spores are much larger and the VBs in the paraphyses brownish and elongated.  Perhaps you can clarify the substrate? Alnus and Betula have very characteristic perforations of the vessels (in radial section).

Thank you! I think Salix can be excluded.

Yes! And Betula vs. Alnus is difficult. Perhaps it works with a cross section but I was repeatedly in doubt.
