Dothidea sps. on Dipsacus fullonum?
Hardware Tony, 12-05-2021 20:37
Hardware TonyChecked Ellis & Ellis, Thompson and many other authors and yet can't get close to this ascomycete on Teasel.

Embedded 50% in stem and only 0.1-0.2mm. Gregarious, host darkened epidermis.
Asci: large: 76 - 112 x 13.90 - 16.00µm, IKI-, 8 spored, irregularly unseriate
Spores: appearing verruculose in ascus., 1-septate with smaller lower cell, slighly curled on occasion, 12.94 - 13.46 x 5.92 - 7.04µm

Apprecaite any ideas of genus, with many thanks
Tony

Hi Tony

While perhaps not your fungus this thread might provide some background:

Re : Dothidea sps. on Dipsacus fullonum?
Hi Chris,

Many thanks for this information, certainly found the Genus for sure but at the same time now realise the extent of the problem! I am also part of the problem as I quoted the wrong spore size from my notes from a previous find, must have been the wine, but mine is very similar to yours at: 19.46 - 25.35 x 7 - 8.20µm. Checking all others and with Brian Spooner's at 18 - 23 x 8-9.5, this region seems close and on the same host. I noted that most others specs are very similar across most other Didymella sps other than size of asci, which I assume is relative to the spore size. However, as you say, this group seems host specific and I would suggest D. caulicola seems closest but not definitive, only as I don't have details of D. macrospora.

Looks like until more research becomes available then I'll put this down as a maybe.

Many thanks again,
Tony
