Tiny black bitunicate superficial on Platanus
Ethan Crenson, 13-01-2019 21:29
I find this unknown (to me) asco in the same location in the Bronx, NYC, during the cold months on Platanus.  This was collected on Platanus × acerifolia on January 6th on a fallen branch.  The ascomata cluster on the bare wood and tend to congregate in the grooves on the surface.  They measure .3 to .5 mm in diameter and can be pyriform when hydrated, collapsing when dry.

Asci measure 124-161 by 21-27µm.  Bitunicate.  Ascospores are yellow brown, 4-7 septate, some with longitudinal septa. Thick walled.  They tend to be most constricted at the central septation.  At times the cell closest to that septation is enlarged.  Within the asci I have observed ascospores both with and without a gelatinous sheath.  Ascospores measure 32-46 by 9-11.5µm.

Does anyone know what this could be?  I have consulted Margaret Barr's "Prodromus to Class Loculoascomycetes" without success.  I vaguely considered Trematosphaeria britzelmayriana, which seems to fit microscopically, but the ascomata are submerged in that taxon.

I have posted this same organism twice on AF before...

I am sorry that I cannot help and I am surprised that no-one has come up with an answer.  Do persevere with inquiries.  Surely, someone will come up with a name,

Simon

Hi Simon,

I don't plan to give up.  Though I don't have much experience with the process, I am going to try to culture this collection and sequence it.  I don't have access to a professional lab, so I'll be relying on dumb-luck more than anything else.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Hi Ethan,

Look more towards Leptosphaeriaceae. I don't know your fungus.

Hi Ethan, check the names below.

The name L. platanicola F. Petrak is illegit. but you can find the description on http://www.cybertruffle.org.uk/cyberliber/index.htm

Re : Tiny black bitunicate superficial on Platanus
Thank you all for the suggestions.  The L. platanicola from Howe is erumpant and the spores are 3-septate, so that is ruled out.  The L. platanicola of Petrak is closer to my collection, but the spore size is considerably smaller (at least in two of the three of my collections).  But maybe it has potential.  I will look also in Phaeosphaeria as well.

I think, that it isn´t Leptosphaeria species, but it is Platystomum. (Or somethink with Lophiostomataceae).

Re : Tiny black bitunicate superficial on Platanus
A colleague of mine had an idea about this that I think is a good one.  She suggested Splanchnonema platani.  We frequently find Macrodiplodiopsis desmazierii, the anamorph.  Does anyone have any thoughts about this?
