Black pyrenomycete on Quercus
Ethan Crenson, 18-01-2017 07:55
From New York City. In Prospect Park, Brooklyn on Quercus (or possibly Liriodendron) I found this black pyrenomycete.  It creates large, flat black patches on branches and bark.  Ostioles are umbilicate. Perithecia globose and layered up to three or four deep.  The spores are hyaline, irregularly cylindric with two oil droplets.  Spores measure 8-10.5?m by 4.5-5.5?m.  Asci are IKI+ 82-90?m by 5.8-7.8?m ending in a pointed "tail".

Re : Black pyrenomycete on Quercus
Hi Ethan,
this is a Camillea, likely C. punctulata which is known to occur on Quercus in  north America and to have such ostioles and ascospores.
As it is a species I never encountered and which appears to have tropical counterparts, I would greatly appreciate if you can send me a part of your collection for study.
Thanks,
Jacques

Hi Ethan,
many thanks for the sample which is in excellent condition.
No doubt it is typical Camillea punctulata, nice find!
Cheers,
Jacques
