In det Lachnum
Marja Pennanen, 24-05-2010 10:14
Hello,
once again I have great difficulties to get a determination for a common species.
This grows on grasses or Carex:

Re:In det Lachnum
Please insert a photo of the hairs. They are probably light brown, and I suggest Brunnipila palearum

Re:In det Lachnum
Asci about 55-65x5-6 IKI+, paraphyses lanceolate, 4-5 micrometers wide and even 25 micrometers exceeding the asci. Hairs brown, lighter at tips 4-6 wide and even a little over 100 micrometers long, septate. I think, I saw some crystal yesterday...
The photos are just awful once again, sorry about that.

L. palearum?
My poor key tells, that sp 7-14x1.5-2, asci 45-50x4 and hairs 50-70x3-5, so I'm not sure.

Hello Otto,
once again you answered before I finished my explanation...
I should try to find something about this Brunnipila on the internet...

Thanks: Marja

Hi Marja

If you look on the DVD: HB 2307, you see that my palearum has hairs 90-105(-120) µm, and my asci are even 70-75 x 5.5-6 µm.

I do not believe that your spores attain 3 µm width. Even if these on your photo were 12 µm long, they must be around 2.5 µm wide, which would be still a bit much compared to my data: 12-15.4 x 1.8-2 µm. But are they 12 on the photo?

I assume you used Nordic Macromycetes? They probably have mostly measurements of dead elements, and since asci shrink a lot, these data are not in contradiction.

Perhaps you can verify the absence of croziers? And the casual presence of crystals on the hair tips?

Re:In det Lachnum
Hyvää iltapäivää (=good afternoon),
sorry, I'm sometimes careless. I read the spore size from a wrong specimen row. It should be 10-15x1,5-2,5. I saw something on some hairs and though it was something floated there.

Yes, I've got NM1, but this time I should be ashamed claiming the danish nogler poor. How stupid of me, who's using them so often...

I've noticed very, very often, that I can't trust keys, beacause I use fresh material. It's so much easier so. When fresh they go almost themself between classes ;)

I'll try to chech the croziers next time I study these. Now I'm convinced, that these are B. palearum. And I'm very happy to get some "name" to these. They are quite common and the fact, that they are still indet has been bothering me some time. So thanks once again.

Ciao Beppe,
I think this is really a Brunnipila (Lachnum)
Perhaps Crocicreas coronatum looks like this:
