Calycellina (Phialina), broad spores
Viktorie Halasu, 08-05-2021 00:37
Viktorie HalasuHello,

I can't find a good name for this.
Apothecia 180-260(380) um in diam, on strongly rotten laying wood (Alnus??), lowland alder carr.
C. lacrimiformis is close, but has narrower spores, Susana's collection has similar but larger spores: http://ascofrance.fr/search_forum/65213

Thanks a lot for any help.

Hi Viktorie

this is Hyaloscypha albohyalina s.str. Characteristic for this species are the globose SCBs.

There are no VBs.

Ah! Thank you very much. I don't have CRB right now so I didn't check it.
Are there other Hyaloscypha spp. with such conspicuous SCBs? Somehow I never noticed them in those few species I've seen so far.
Viktorie

Huhtinen (1990) has narrower spores (mean Q = 3,6) even in fresh material, but some of the photos in your folder agree well with my coll.

I cannot remember any other species of that genus with these SCBs.

Hello both of you, if I may ask: what are SCB's? Maybe a stupid question but I have no idea....
I find on the Internet: KOH soluble cytoplasmic bodies. What I learned what that VB's could be seen in parafyses and determined because of the fact that they disappear rapidly in KOH...?
But SCBs I have never heard of before....

Thank you!

Maria

Hello Maria,
everything's described in Zotto's basic work:

Re : Calycellina (Phialina), broad spores
Thanks, Viktorie. In short:

Both SCBs and VBs disappear in dead cells, totally or get distorted (very irregular in shape), in KOH or MLZ or CB or what ever kills the cells, including a flame under the slide.

VBs are a refractive substance in vacuoles, SCBs a refractive substance in the cytoplasm outside of vacuoles. Therefore, vacuolar stains like Cresyl Blue stain VBs but not SCBs.

A minor remark: The apostroph before the "s" is used for the genetive of a noun but not for plural.

Thank you both!
Viktorie, the document is very helpful!
Zotto, your extra explanation too. I will study on it and will try to see it as much as possible. The more you see it, the easier it will get to recognise I think (hope haha).

Zotto: you are right with the 's. In Dutch we do use it for plural in some cases, but not in English..probably in no other language now I think about it....

Maria

Germans too often make the mistake with the apostroph.
